THAT GOOD GLITTER

At this time of year, the shortcut to mega-watt shine (and F-U-N) can be summed up with one word: GLITTER! We’ve been #obsessed with it for the better part of 2019, thanks to the major makeup statements of the FW19 runways. The smattering of loose silver specks on lids at Dries van Noten offered an arts ‘n crafts vibe, while the rosy pink sparkling shadow used at Rodarte created sophisticated orbital impact. Also deserving of a shoutout were those glittering rainbow-coloured brows seen at Valentino Haute Couture. Pop culture sure got in on the glitter action, too. The radiant makeup texture was heavily trending thanks to HBO’s Euphoria. A roster of wildly creative, light-reflecting looks were practically their own character, and a bright spot within the dark storyline. IRL simplicity is effective, and perhaps the best part of playing with the sparkly stuff is that you don’t need to worry about much else, makeup-wise. Like our model Preet here, adding a touch of glitter to a single spot on the face yields a complete glow up. Maximum impact with minimal effort? Now that’s good.

Who doesn’t love a little sparkly sumthin’? (Hint hint: nobody.) Add a touch of sparkle to your beauty look with these party-ready picks.

Marc Jacobs See-Quins Glam Glitter Eyeshadow.jpg

The road to glitter success is paved with, wait for it, primer! Before you dive into anything shiny, prep your canvas to enhance the product’s ability to hug skin and increase longevity. How you apply something will also influence the outcome: use your ring finger to pack glitter over a large area (hello eyelids!) for an intense effect, or use a flat synthetic brush for more precise or diffused distribution, like along the lash line.

OPI Glitter Nail Polish

Following up on an insanely popular 2016 collab, this collection of 15 shades radiates with options. The best part is you can incorporate as much, or as little, glitter to your mani as you wish. Try an accent nail for just a dash, take it up a notch with a negative space design or go full throttle with solid sparkle on every dang digit.

OPI x Hello Kitty Nail Lacquer in Glitter to my Heart, Dream in Glitter and Born to Sparkle, $14 ea.

NYX Love Lust Disco Shimmer Down Body Oil

This shimmering body oil makes the cut when a special garment shines a spotlight on collarbones, shoulders, or heck, even a sliver of ankles. Because A) we don’t believe in relegating radiance to the face only, and B) we are SO down with a beauty element being the best accessory to any outfit.

🌿 Looking for BIODEGRADABLE glitter? we got you 🌿

We * love* glitter but, unfortunately, most cosmetic glitter is made from small bits of plastic which means it’s pretty crappy for the planet. Here are three options made from plant cellulose, so you can shine on while being eco-conscious.

EcoStardust JellyFish Biodegradable Glitter PURE.jpg

This U.K.-based brand makes their sparkly stuff from eucalyptus trees in a variety of shapes, sizes and colours. Their ‘Pure’ line is 100% plastic-free, will decompose in four weeks and is safe to use on the face, hair and nails.

EcoStardust Jellyfish Biodegradable Glitter Pure, $13

Unicorn Skin Biodegradable Stars.jpg

We have stars in our eyes for this galactic glitter pot! A popular choice in the drag community (the brand was founded by Rupaul’s Drag Race alum Acid Betty), this line has eco-friendly glitter and lashes so you can feel the fantasy while doing good for the planet.

Unicorn Skin Cosmetics Biodegradable Stars, $11

Dust & Dance Biodegradable Glitter in Mayan Gold.jpg

Vegan, cruelty- and plastic-free, this brand creates a multitude of shades with each pot containing three sizes of glitter flecks—fine, chunky and super chunky. This Mayan Gold hue caught our eye to create a holiday-ready rose gold beauty look.
