The Best Beauty Looks from the 2020
golden globes
There was no shortage of beauty inspo last night on the Golden Globes red carpet. From daring hair colours to mega watt skin, here are our picks for the looks that earned top marks.
Let’s be honest, while red carpet hair is beautiful, it’s not often interesting. That’s why when someone steps out in a jaw-dropping new hair hue, we take notice. Cynthia Erivo’s cropped icy ‘do lit up the red carpet and was a chrome beacon in a sea of blonde and brunette manes. While she’s rocked pastel green and pink in the past, this shade of silver was the perfect compliment to her custom glitzy Thom Browne gown. Hair artist Coree Moreno created Erivo’s bold colour the morning of the globes and styled her pixie using Dove hair products to keep her cropped curls in place.
Obviously, we stan Pati Dubroff (catch our recent video interview with her here). The makeup legend is another artist that always makes exciting red carpet choices and last night’s look on Margot Robbie was a case in perfectly edited beauty. Gorgeous natural skin, a nude lip courtesy of Chanel Rouge Coco Flash in Contraste and a “dash of a firework,” as she says on Robbie’s lash line in a rich purple hue. *chef’s kiss* perfection.
Every time Cate Blanchett hits a red carpet she gives us all a lesson in style and grace. Last night was no different, stepping out in a buttery Mary Katrantzou gown pleated and stoned for the gods. Her beauty look was juuuust right, with the Armani Beauty ambassador wearing a monochromatic peachy look on lids, lips and cheeks created by makeup artist Cedric Jolivet. Get the swoon-worthy look with the brand’s Eye Tint Liquid Eyeshadow in Sunset and Lip Maestro Liquid Lipstick in Blush.
Bobs were a-plenty on the Globes carpet last night (Michelle, Zoey, Naomi and more all rocked ‘em) but our vote for best crop goes to Kerry Washington. The sleek silhouette is proof that it’s not always about the beach waves and made us want to dig out our blow dry serums ASAP. Not to mention it amped up the 🔥🔥🔥 factor of her Altuzarra ensemble (hello bedazzled harness!) for an overall incredible look. Celeb hairstylist Takisha Sturdivant-Drew used Neuro tools and Paul Mitchell hair products to create Washington’s super smooth strands.
Lucy Boynton quickly became one of the most watched stars on the red carpet as she consistently excites with her beauty looks. Her MUA Jo Baker creates tiny works of art on Boynton and we are HERE FOR IT. This glittery masterpiece reminded us of the recent trend of magical Euphoria-inspired makeup and it lights a little fire in our beauty loving hearts. Baker used Chanel Ombre Première Laque Longwear Liquid Eyeshadow in Desert Wind and then placed crystals in a winged shape along her lid. She also prepped her skin with Weleda Sensitive Care Facial Cream for a heavy dose of moisture and 🌟glow🌟.
Anyway you look at it Awkwafina had a MAJOR night! In addition to winning the best actress in a musical or comedy award for her role in The Farewell, she also made history as the first woman of Asian decent to win in the category. Plus, she easily landed on the night's best dressed list, appearing in an insanely chic, tuxedo-inspired look by Dior, as one does. And her beauty choices were equally solid. From the killer cat eye liner to the perfectly executed matte red lip, and we can't ignore those heavenly, pearlescent cheekbones, Awkwafina looked AH-MAZING! While we await deets on the exact shade of Lorac lipstick makeup artist Kirin Bhatty used, we shall be following her skin care prep for the star in our quest for luminosity. Bhatty used Weleda Skin Food Original Ultra-Rich Cream, $24, calling it her secret weapon for glowy skin.
With her voluminous curls coiffed in a truly cool short hairstyle we have definitive proof: there's nothing Phoebe Waller-Bridge can't do. The Fleabag star, and multiple award-winner, made a strong case for a curly crop or curly bangs – or BOTH DAMMIT – and no doubt changed lives overnight. Because if you have big curls, you've no doubt been told your best bet is to keep the length long and/or have been laughed at in the face when inquiring about a fringe. Well, it's a new decade, friends! Both notions are dead to us, so start snippin'. And get yer hands on a curl cream with hydrating hold – Ingrie's fave is Design.ME Bounce.ME Curl Balm, $22.
Beanie Feldstein, nominee and star of Booksmart, delivered a serious lesson (sorry, not sorry) in nailing monochromatic style. Dressed in a stunning, off-the-shoulder Oscar de la Renta navy gown, she went the matchy-matchy route and accessorized it with a trendy, chunky velvet headband plus drop floral bud earrings with a vintage vibe. But it was her hair and makeup that tapped into her knockout status. Makeup artist Katey Denno created a strong winged liner that we are willing to put money on was also navy, not black. Our pick? Make Up For Ever Aqua XL Ink Liner Extra Long Lasting Waterproof Eyeliner in Lustrous Deep Blue, $30. Meanwhile, hairstylist Peter Butler framed Beanie's face with a sleek centre part and shaped her long hair into smooth waves. The result? Geometric perfection all around.
When Sandra Bullock shashayed on stage to present the final award of the night, we nearly fell off the couch! The veteran star looked incredible. Dress? An elegant golden ruffled number, accented with layered chainlink necklaces, so ladylike and edgy. Complexion? Glowing, naturally beautiful, and no questionable/discernible/cringeworthy work. But it was her hair that really got us. We're talking her signature rich brunette with subtle honey-kissed highlights, a highly covetable bendy-meets-messy texture and SO! MUCH! SHINE! Inspired to slap on a hair mask there and then, we're also putting Emily's tried-and-true Verb Ghost Oil, $20, on standby to give all our upcoming appearances a luminosity boost.
Though she's a chameleon who can pull off any look, Zoe Kravitz knows the power of simplicity. Here, the black and white polka dots adorning her Saint Laurent dress are exhibit A that everything needn't be all extra, all the time. Further evidence is the Big Little Lies stars' return to an iconic noir pixie cut, which highlights her full brows, sky high cheekbones and delicate freckles. Selecting a deep red matte stain lipstick, like YSL Beauty Tatouage Couture in 12 Red Tribe, $29, was the final, heart-stopping, punctuation mark. So simple, so effective.
